Usha Chilukuri Vance is an accomplished American lawyer and the Second Lady of the United States, as the wife of Vice President JD Vance. She holds the distinction of being the first Asian American and Hindu to serve in this role. Born on January 6, 1986, in San Diego, California, Usha was raised in a Telugu-Indian immigrant family in an upper-middle-class suburb.
Usha was born to Telugu Indian immigrants, Krish and Lakshmi Chilukuri, who moved to the United States in the 1980s and settled in Rancho Peñasquitos, San Diego. She excelled academically, graduating summa cum laude from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree in history.
As a Gates Cambridge Scholar, Usha pursued her Master of Philosophy in Early Modern History at Clare College, Cambridge, in 2010. She then earned her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 2013, where she met her future husband, JD Vance.
Usha married JD Vance in 2014, and together they have three children: Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. Raised in a Hindu family, Usha continues to practice Hinduism and embraces her cultural heritage.
She is proud to be the first Indian-American and first Hindu to serve as the Second Lady of the United States. Her parents, Krish and Lakshmi Chilukuri, and grandparents, Sundari and C. Rama Sastri, have significantly influenced her life.
As Second Lady, Usha Vance has championed issues related to education and family welfare, using her legal expertise and diverse cultural background to bring fresh perspectives to policy discussions. She remains a strong advocate for initiatives that promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for families across the country.
