- 1988: However, his tenure was short-lived. He switched parties to Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) and became the first MP in India to be disqualified under the anti-defection law.
Active role in state politics:
- Lalduhoma remained active in Mizoram politics, despite the initial setback. He founded the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) in 2017, a coalition of six regional parties and civil society groups.
- He contested state assembly elections, winning seats from Aizawl West I and Serchhip constituencies. He chose to represent Serchhip from 2018 onwards.
Disqualification and comeback:
- In 2020, Lalduhoma again faced disqualification as an MLA, this time for violating the anti-defection law, becoming the first such case in a state legislature.
- Undeterred, he won a by-election from Serchhip in 2021, showcasing his strong local support.
Leading ZPM to victory:
- In the 2023 Mizoram Assembly elections, Lalduhoma led the ZPM to a landslide victory, defeating the incumbent MNF party. This success cemented his position as a major political force in the state.
Present and future:
- On December 8, 2023, Lalduhoma was sworn in as the 6th Chief Minister of Mizoram. He now faces the challenge of delivering on ZPM’s promises and leading the state towards further development.
