Mamata Banerjee

Early life and Education: History degree from Jogamaya Devi College, Kolkata; Master’s in Muslim history from Osmania University, Hyderabad.

Political Career

  • Banerjee began her political career in 1970 when she joined the Indian National Congress.
  • She was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, in 1977.
  • She served in the Union Cabinet as Minister of Railways and Minister of Coal from 1991 to 1996.
  • In 1998, Banerjee left the Congress Party and founded the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). The TMC won a landslide victory in the 2011 West Bengal state assembly elections, ending 34 years of rule by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
