Senior Shiv Sena leader and influential figure in Maharashtra politics passes away in Mumbai.
MUMBAI, INDIA – Manohar Joshi, a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics and a former Chief Minister of the state, passed away on February 23, 2024, at the age of 86. Joshi, a senior Shiv Sena leader, died at the P.D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Mumbai.
A prominent figure within the Shiv Sena, Manohar Joshi held influential positions such as Mayor of Mumbai and Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. His contributions culminated in his role as Chief Minister of Maharashtra (1995-1999). Joshi’s dedication to public service extended to the national level, where he served as the 13th Speaker of the Lok Sabha (2002-2004).
Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum following the news of Joshi’s passing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sadness, calling Joshi “a stalwart of Maharashtra politics.”
Joshi’s funeral will be held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai later today. He is survived by his wife and children.
