Sucheta Kripalani – India’s First Female Chief Minister & Freedom Fighter

Sucheta Kripalani’s Early Life, Education, and the Freedom Struggle

Born in Ambala in 1908, Sucheta Kripalani received her education in Delhi, earning a Master’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College. This educational background instilled in her a deep understanding of history and a passion for social change. She went on to become a professor of Constitutional History at Banaras Hindu University.

Her academic experiences fueled her critical thinking and likely shaped her political philosophy. Her life took a pivotal turn when she met and married Acharya J. B. Kripalani, a prominent figure in the Indian National Congress. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s call for non-violent resistance, Kripalani plunged wholeheartedly into the freedom movement

After India’s independence in 1947, Kripalani emerged as a formidable political leader. She was elected to the Constituent Assembly and played a crucial role in shaping India’s Constitution. She was a vocal advocate for women’s rights and social justice, founding the All India Mahila Congress in 1940.

Kripalani’s administrative acumen was recognized when she became a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government. In 1963, she made history when she became the first woman Chief Minister of an Indian state, taking the helm of Uttar Pradesh.
