The official death toll confirms at least 60 fatalities within Hathras district, with neighboring Etah hospitals reporting an additional 27 deaths. This pushes the confirmed death toll over 100, with a significant number of attendees suffering injuries.
Cause of Stampede Under Scrutiny
The exact cause of the stampede remains under investigation. Authorities are looking into factors like crowd management at the venue, potential capacity limitations, and any triggers within the gathering that may have incited panic.
Nation Mourns, Help Extended
The tragedy has evoked nationwide grief and expressions of support. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex-gratia compensation for the families of the deceased and those critically injured. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and ordered a high-level probe into the incident.
