Neil Wagner Announces International Cricket Retirement

Bengaluru, Karnataka, India (February 27, 2024) – Neil Wagner, the tireless left-arm fast bowler for the New Zealand Black Caps, has announced his retirement from international cricket. Wagner’s 12-year career includes 64 Test matches, placing him fifth on the all-time list of New Zealand’s most prolific wicket-takers.

Known for his relentless energy, fiery short-ball tactics, and ability to swing the ball both ways, Wagner cemented himself as a Black Caps legend. He was a pivotal member of the squad that lifted the inaugural ICC World Test Championship trophy in 2021.

Wagner finishes his storied career with a total of 260 Test wickets, averaging 27. His extraordinary strike rate of 52 places him among the quickest wicket-takers for New Zealand bowlers with 100+ wickets.

“It’s been an emotional week,” Wagner stated in a recent interview. “I’ve given this game my all, but injuries are taking their toll, and the time feels right to step away and pave the way for the next generation of Black Caps bowlers.”

Wagner’s grit and determination will be sorely missed by fans worldwide, but his legacy as one of New Zealand’s most passionate and effective bowlers is undeniable. His contributions to Test cricket have left an enduring mark on the game.

“Fans will never forget Wagner’s fiery 7-wicket haul against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, a performance that showcased his relentless accuracy and stamina.  His ability to extract bounce and movement from seemingly docile pitches was a critical asset for the Black Caps. Additionally, his spirited on-pitch battles with top-class batsmen like Virat Kohli and Steve Smith consistently produced riveting contests.”
